Football. The world's most widespread sport. More than 240 million adults and kids over the world, plays football. You just need a ball to play it? But, under all this happiness, it is a hidden environmental offender.

Have you ever seen thos black small rubber spheres on the artifical fields around the country? 31. December 2015 NFF said that we have 1474 artifical football fields in our country. In Norway, the rubber spheres is a much bigger problem, because it is so expensive to maintain the artifical turf. A strong winter and the average low temperature than the southern countries, makes it hard to grow nature grass. Artifical fields stays in every types of weather, something that fits our country pretty well. Virtually every artifical football- fields are filled with thes small rubber spheres. This is small rubber spheres that shall prevent damages and make the field comfortable to play at. They are just made out of rubber? And they are just laying on the fields? What kind of damages can this small rubber spheres do?

Calculations that COWI has done, shows that 5% of the rubber spheres disappears from the fields every single year. Every square meter contains around 10-15kg of rubber spheres, this makes ca. 3-5 tons of rubber spheres disappearing from one football field each year! The most of it get rinsed by the rain and wind. When tons of materials like this, get flushed into the nature, it will influence the nature in a bad way. The rubber on the field itself isnt't very dangerous, but is when when it gets into the nature. The problem is when the animals begins to eat it. Which type of influece does this have on our nature and our animals. First, we have to find out what the rubber actually is made of.

These rubber spheres, is mostly made out of chopped tires. The reason for this, is because the tires is hard to fix, if they brakes, or get a hole. So far, the car tires is a pretty good idea. Until you get to know that these old car tires contains more than 60 different types of chemicals. NIVA has with their analysis, concluded that the tires are lacking substances like HA-oils, PAH- connections, Zinc, chromium and a moderate contents of phtalates and phenols. You dont understand anything of this, do you? But this is substances that affect the nature negatively. The most of them are no-natural substances that evokes cancer, astma and allergy. It is two scenarios. 1) The animals eat them. This can lead to illness and poisoning. The illness will spread in the ecosystem and end up in our stomachs. To the humans. 2) It ends up in the nature and nerly located ponds. In the nature, plants and grass can take up the poison. The ground would also manage to absorb metals and connections thats not good for the ground. Thereafter, the substances will get to the nearest watercourses. Do we want poisoned ponds in our neighbourhood?

In the recent years, we've been more observant that the rubber spheres is a threat to the environment. Researchers has got more knowledge about what rubber does to our society and environment. Nowadays we have began thinking about how dangerous it could be. But, start growing new natural grass fields will both cost money and take time. In addition to that, we live in Norway. Norway got a climate that is not very suitable for growing natural green grass. Natural fields works out better in the southern countries. So, what options do we have, that's not very expensive? The less espensive and maybe the most effective options, is to replace the rubber with new renwable materials. By doing this, we just have to remove the rubber and then fill in with new materials. Torp football club in Østfold has tried out cork. I've played on this field on my own and experiensed that it was as good to play on as a "normal" field, filled with rubber. If not better. Unisport now sells both spheres made of rubber(with less waste in it) and spheres made of cork. Our best option now, is probably the cork. It is renwable, and it doesn't  contian any form of waste. The remaining part of it,is to get it through the politicians, who can make field after field renewable. In this way, the football can be a part of the big "voluntary work".

To summarize this up. In the hole artifical-field hisory i Norway, we've used rubber spheres. Because of the large increasing number of football fields we got now in the last few years, the quantity of the rubber spheres increased in the nature. Research shows us that the rubber spheres is affecting the nature in a bad way. Contianing poisonous substances, metals and organic-connections that goes through our eco-system. In spite of this, we have found new methods to make the field comfortable use. Just using sand or cork-matherials. In this way- believe it or not- the football can make a change. Through creativity and new-thinking. Creativity and new-thinking is to keywords on how we should solve this environmental crisis. Cause, if we don't solve this crisis now. There will be no crisis anymore.
